Pet joint pain is a common condition among elderly animals. Cats are part of the pet population that can be affected by it, including cat arthritis. Joint pain can often lead to osteoarthritis and can be caused by excess weight. For this reason it is important to feed your cat the proper diet and keep him moving.

Cat arthritis can be characterized by a number of symptoms, such as: stiffness upon rising from rest, reluctance to jump, obvious pain when walking and personality changes (i.e. depression). If your cat is suffering from any of these symptoms, it may be of benefit to see a veterinarian. The vet will perform a physical examination and rule out other health conditions through blood tests, radiographs, ultrasounds or other procedures.

You may feel helpless when it comes to helping your cat with arthritis; however, there are plenty of ways that you can assist your pet.

* Exercise: Although it may not seem like it, exercise does help arthritis. If the joints stay still all the time they will be more likely to become sore. Moving them will ease off pain in the long run, and help your cat to lose weight if it needs to.

* Warmth: Cat arthritis can also be helped through providing warmth, this eases their pain. There are plenty of ways that warmth can be provided, such as with a heating blanket, heating pad or rice pack. However, the heating element must be kept on a low setting to avoid burns. Remember, you are providing warmth, not hot heat. If possible, you can give your cat a gentle massage. Be careful because some cats are not comfortable with this, just see where your cat is comfort wise and follow their lead.

* Medication: There are also several medications that can be provided to your cat to help with arthritis. Pet joint pain can be eased with a product called Duralactin. Duralactin for felines comes in either capsule or liquid form. It is derived from milk and can help your pet live a more comfortable and active life. The product helps to reduce chronic inflammation in the joints. It also helps to prevent subsequent tissue damage. Duralactin has been found to be harmless and has the possibility to provide results in less than one week. However, it may not be the best treatment for your cat so it's important to talk to a veterinarian before using it.

Another pet that is likely to experience joint pain in its elderly years are dogs. Dog arthritis is characterized by symptoms such as: favoring a limb, difficulty sitting or standing, sleeping more, hesitancy to jump, run or climb stairs, weight gain, decreased activity or less interest in play and behavior changes. Just like with felines, it is important to see a veterinarian if your pet has any of these symptoms. Duralactin can also be used to treat arthritis in dogs.

Remember that even if your pet isn't a senior yet, they can still be affected by arthritis. To prevent pet joint pain, keep them at a healthy weight and exercise them often. Keep an eye out for symptoms of cat arthritis and dog arthritis. It's better to be safe than sorry, so see a veterinarian right away if any of the symptoms persist.
